The Volkswagen Golf Mk2 GTI 16S, launched in 1984, is a sporty version of the famous compact car. Succeeding the Golf Mk1 GTI, it embodies a significant evolution with a slightly rounded design, developed under the direction of Schäfer at Volkswagen, while maintaining the visual identity of its predecessor.
Under the hood, the GTI 16S version is equipped with a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine with Bosch K-Jetronic injection. In 1986, a double overhead camshaft (DOHC) version was introduced, delivering 139 hp at 6,100 rpm and a torque of 168 Nm at 4,600 rpm. This engine, more powerful than that of the standard GTI, marked a step forward in performance for the sporty compact cars of the time. The GTI 16S is also distinguished by 16V or 16S badges and specific finishes.
Produced until 1992, the Golf Mk2 GTI 16S saw notable updates, such as the introduction of the “Big Bumpers” in 1990. The Mk2 is also the last generation of Golf to offer carburettor engines, before injection became mandatory in Europe. This model remains a milestone for fans of sporty compact cars.
