The first-generation 928 that we are offering was sold new on May 30, 1978 to a first owner residing in Stuttgart, the cradle of the Porsche brand.
From all the documents that accompany the car, it appears that this first owner kept it for more than 20 years, traveling only about 80,000 km during this long period.
A 2nd owner owned this 928 in the early 2000s. Although he also does not drive much (85,822 km - invoice dated 22/4/2003 and 90,129 km - invoice dated 24/07/2006), he maintained it in perfect condition, as evidenced by the numerous invoices bearing his name on the file. In addition, it makes a small modification that is very beneficial to the look of this 928 by equipping it with wider rims at the rear, combined with special springs that slightly lower the car (all parts approved by the TÜV).
Our 928 arrived in France in May 2007 when the 3rd owner purchased it from the Porsche specialist DLS in Fellbach, near Stuttgart.
The mileage was then 91344 km and it was one of the most beautiful and most expensive 928 series 1 on the market at the time.
Finally, totaling 101,000 km in 2014, the 928 changed hands one last time with an owner fascinated by the unique lines of this Porsche.
The central part of the “Tennis” velvet upholstery was redone at their request with the original Porsche material in 2015 (including driver's seat foams) as well as the steering wheel leather.
Recently, they reluctantly decided to part with it, after realizing that it had not driven enough in recent years with their 928.
In the meantime, the 928 has been carefully maintained by recognized specialists until the last revision was carried out shortly for sale, including a repair of the brakes (calipers).
Being a car in original condition and therefore not restored, this 928 is in remarkable condition for these 45 years. A few small paint defects will be revealed by careful examination but nothing that does not require immediate repair or that affects the appearance of the car.
As we have seen, the interior has been picked up where necessary and is therefore flawless.
The engine starts instantly both hot and cold, in a very pleasant cavernous rumble and offers a torque and a range that is still very pleasant, giving the impression of never forcing.
We can't say it enough: the automatic transmission (originally from Mercedes and chosen at the time by Porsche for its responsiveness) is perfectly suited to the GT spirit of the 928, providing a smooth and relaxed drive. On our 928, it combines the gears perfectly and downshifts as required according to throttle demand, without requiring the kick-down and the brutality that accompanied this maneuver on most automatic transmissions of that time.
Finally, the brakes, freshly revised by a specialist, provide the slowdowns in line with the still current performances of the 928.
In summary, a beautiful and rare original 928, having always driven but few kilometers, well maintained and very desirable in this Indischrot color that enhances the curves of the body.
At the dawn of the 70s, Porsche wanted to get out of its image as a single-model brand. And despite the resounding success of the 911, some managers in Zuffenhausen will try to push the iconic coupe out. Indeed, the layout of his flat-six in a backpack was considered outdated and without a future. An observation that seems funny in retrospect but which fuelled virulent debates at the time.
This desire for diversification will result in the development of new bodies and engines giving rise to PMA (front-engine Porsches) such as the 944 and 928.The latter embodies Porsche's desire to position a car on the GT 2+2 sports market. It began its development phase in 1971 and went into production 6 years later in 1977. Equipped with a 4.5-liter V8 placed in the front position, it sports an avant-garde design that is the opposite of that of the 911. And like all LDCs, it was not really unanimous among Porsche owners, considering this new architecture to be sacrilegious. But regardless, his core target was not here. Widely intended for the American public, its V8 and automatic gearbox allowed it to quickly benefit from great popularity across the Atlantic.
Surprisingly, the 928 will have a lifespan of 18 years during which several ever more powerful and successful versions will follow one another. In 1986, the Porsche 928 was revised and marketed as an S4 version, an improved version of the S2 version with the 320 hp 5.0 L V8 engine. The front and rear bumpers were redesigned to improve aerodynamics and a rear spoiler appeared in particular to improve downforce at high speed.
