The Peugeot 304, presented in 1969, comes from the long line of vehicles produced by the famous French brand Peugeot. While the 304, in its hatchback version, was already remarkable for its modern design and road performance, the coupe, introduced in 1970, provided an additional touch in terms of elegance and sportiness.
The story of the 304 coupe began in 1969, during the Paris Motor Show. It was then presented as a sportier and aesthetically refined variant of the 304 saloon. Designed by the Peugeot design office in collaboration with Pininfarina, a famous Italian coachbuilder, the 304 coupe is distinguished by its fluid lines, its extended hood and its distinctive roof fall, characteristic of the coupe design of this period.
Under the hood, the 1972 Peugeot 304 Coupé Series 1 borrowed its engine from the hatchback. It was a 1288 cm³ inline four cylinder gasoline engine. This delivered a power of 80 hp, allowing the coupe to reach a maximum speed of around 165 km/h. The 304 coupe was equipped with a four-speed manual gearbox, with front-wheel drive, a configuration typical of Peugeot vehicles of that time.
In terms of suspension, the 304 coupe was equipped with independent MacPherson type suspensions at the front, and a rigid axle with coil springs at the rear. Front disc brakes and rear drum brakes ensured adequate stopping power for the vehicle.
The interior, while simple, was designed to provide a satisfactory level of comfort. The seats were upholstered in quality fabric and the dashboard, although simple, offered all the necessary information for the driver.
Over the years, the 304 coupe has undergone several evolutions, both mechanically and aesthetically. However, the Series 1 remains iconic for its initial design and its positioning on the market. It was seen as an affordable alternative to the more expensive sports Coupes of the time.
Commercially, the 304 coupe was relatively successful, mainly in Europe. Its combination of elegant design, reliable mechanics and an affordable price made it a preferred choice for many consumers looking to combine driving pleasure and aesthetics.
The 1972 Peugeot 304 Coupé Series 1 remains an icon of the French automobile of that time. Combining elegance, performance and reliability, it testifies to Peugeot's expertise in designing vehicles that combine style and substance.
