Launched in 2009, the SLS AMG is a genuine supercar produced by the German brand. Paying tribute to the 300 SL Gullwing, it has the SL name, but also has elytra doors, a true symbol democratized by the latter. In 2011, a roadster version was unveiled to complete the range. The latter abandons the elytra doors in favor of a soft roof with electric closure. The Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster is a roofless variant of the SLS AMG, a supercar introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 2009. It belongs to the AMG range, the high performance division of the German brand.

The genesis of the SLS AMG is rooted in the collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren that resulted in the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. After the end of this collaboration, Mercedes-Benz wanted to create a spiritual successor to the 1950's 300 SL Gullwing, while also honoring the heritage of the “SL” name. That's how the SLS AMG, with its distinctive “seagull wings” doors, was born.

The Roadster version, launched in 2011, completed the range. Unlike the coupe, it did not adopt “gull wing” doors, but a traditional soft top that opens and closes electrically in seconds.

On the technical side, the SLS AMG Roadster is powered by a 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine developing 571 hp (420 kW) and 650 Nm of torque. Combined with a 7-speed SPEEDSHIFT DCT dual-clutch gearbox, this engine propels the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 317 km/h. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels, with a double wishbone suspension system to provide optimal driving dynamics.

The SLS AMG Roadster benefitted from an aluminum chassis that was both light and rigid, which compensated for the lack of a fixed roof. To ensure maximum torsional stiffness, the structure was reinforced at the door sills, the central tunnel and the windshield pillars.

The exterior design, while similar to the coupe, has undergone some changes to adapt to the soft top. The roll bars behind the seats and the soft top mechanism have been elegantly integrated, maintaining the car's fluid line.
