Our Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagode was delivered new in Germany and put into circulation on June 30, 1969. It was imported into France in 2020 and its current owner acquired it in 2023.
This example comes in a Cream color, combined with white sidewall wheels and original black and silver rims, as well as a black leather interior. It also has a brown hard top. Note also the presence of air conditioning, which is rare on the Pagodas. This 280SL has a very slight defect in the hood paint following a touch-up.
Mechanically, this 280SL is powered by a 168-horsepower 6-cylinder engine, combined with the 4-speed manual gearbox. Its mechanical functioning is irreproachable. Interviews are carried out at the Mercedes Center and by specialists in vintage vehicles. The original notebook retraces the complete history of this copy. The last revision, dating from 2020, involved nearly €25,000 in work.

Originally, Mercedes-Benz had never intended to produce its 300SL in a road version. It was with the advice of the famous importer Max Hoffman that the brand unveiled its public version in 1954 at the New York Auto Show. A great success, the 300SL was not produced very long, in particular because of its excessively high production cost. The German brand decided to produce a car that would inspire as much desire, built from existing parts. This is the 190SL. From 1955 to 1963, the 190SL was a great success. Its design and its 4 cylinders were adopted with great enthusiasm. Its power raised questions in the 1960s, causing it to be replaced by a new SL, the W113.
Designed by Paul Bracq, the 230SL very quickly inherited the nickname “Pagoda”, in reference to its roof and its particular shape that gave it a unique profile. The W113 is the first SL using a 6-cylinder engine to be mass-produced. It was produced from 1963 to 1971, and will be available in 3 distinct versions. The 230SL then offered 148 horsepower and 196 Nm of torque, and remained in production until 1967. It was replaced by the 250SL until 1968 (148 horsepower and 216 Nm) and by the 280SL from 1967 to 1971 (168 horsepower and 244 Nm). Approximately 49,000 copies of the Pagoda will be sold, which will be nicknamed one of the most beautiful cars of all time.
