Our Lotus Esprit Turbo SE was delivered new in the United States and put into circulation during the year 1990. It knows 3 owners, including 2 French, the importer and its current owner who has owned it since 2019.
This Lotus Esprit Turbo SE is in excellent overall condition, in keeping with its low mileage of 43,950 KM. In a red hue, combined with a Caramel interior and chrome aluminum rims, this example has no flaws.
In terms of mechanics, its operation is irreproachable. The 2.2-liter 4-cylinder engine developing 264 horsepower, combined with the 5-speed manual gearbox, still offers excellent performance. The maintenance is carried out by antique specialists. Numerous invoices are available for consultation. The last interview is carried out at the end of 2023. It has new tires, suspensions, a stainless steel pot, a transmitter and a new clutch receiver.
Presented at the 1972 Turin Motor Show, the Lotus Esprit was derived from an Italdesign concept car. Straight out of the designs of Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Esprit is designed as an improved derivative of the Lotus Europa and Lotus Eclat from the 1970s. The fiberglass and Kevlar body with retractable headlight is typical of the seventies, and very similar to Lamborghini Countach or Maserati Khasmin. It quickly became Lotus' commercial asset to compete with the Porsche 911 and Ferrari 308. Its 160-horsepower engine was rapidly improved over the years, especially following the release of the Turbo version of the Esprit S2, with no less than 210 horsepower. The S3 version will bring the choice between a naturally aspirated engine and a supercharged engine, and greatly increased reliability.
In the mid-1980s, a change was wanted at Lotus. Peter Stevens' team is tasked with tackling the “X180" project, which is to update the Lotus Esprit design. The line designed by Giugiaro, a striking feature of the Spirit, is aging and must be renewed. The design team is busy rounding the corners, without taking away its soul. The shields are better integrated, but the low height and the flat windshield that are so characteristic are retained. The air intakes are completely redesigned and the lights are fully integrated. In the cabin, the central instrument console and steering wheel have been given a new look. The seats now have more position adjustments, but the semi-recumbent driving position is still current.
On the engine side, Lotus kept its Type 910 engine, and transformed it with some modifications into a 910 “S” for the Turbo SE. The injection is now fully managed electronically, while the turbocharger is equipped with an overboost, offering 20 additional horsepower for a short period of time. The 264 horsepower deployed at 6,500 rpm do not disappoint and allow you to reach 0 to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 262 km/h. The design transition of the S1 is more than successful and allows the Lotus Esprit to continue its journey, on the roads, but also in the studio. Julia Roberts and Sharon Stone will praise it in their respective movies “Pretty Woman” and “Basic Instinct”, true English class.
