Description and Key Highlights of this Example

  • Good general condition
  • Complete engine repair
  • Full history

Our Triumph GT6 MKII was put into circulation during the year 1969. It has been in the hands of 4 owners, including its current owner, French, since January 16, 2021.

This example is in good general condition, with the few minor defects of a car dating from 1969. In a blue hue, combined with silver Minilite rims, numerous chrome elements, black leather seats and a wooden dashboard, this Triumph GT6 is presented in its original condition.

At the mechanical level, there are no faults in its operation. It benefits from a complete renovation of the in-line 6-cylinder. The latter develops 105 hp, combined with a 4-speed mechanical gearbox, and offers a true symphony from the lowest speeds. The interview is carried out by Storic Italia Marseille. A complete history since 2006 is available. Repairs to the rear axle, a windshield wiper change and a technical inspection will be carried out before the sale. This copy has a radio and a custom cover.

Model History and Evolution

In the 1960s, English brands such as Triumph and MG fought a battle in the small sports car segment, among others. During the winter of 1962-1963, Harry Webster, technical director of Triumph, asked the Italian designer Giovanni Michelloti to produce a new prototype, based on the Spitfire released the previous year. This prototype is a coupe, presented and successfully welcomed by Coventry managers. The latter uses the chassis and design of the Triumph Spitfire, but ignores the 4-cylinder engine considered too weak. Engineers will choose the in-line 6 engine already adopted on the Triumph Herald. This one, in a choice of performance, will be improved by going in particular from a displacement of 1.6L to 2L. After several months of work and some prototypes, the model was finally presented to the public at the Paris and London Motor Show in 1966. The Triumph GT6 makes its appearance, a year after its competitor MGB GT.

The Triumph GT6 reveals a resplendent fastback line, both sporty and attractive. The Spitfire design is transfigured and perfectly integrated by Giovanni Michelloti into this new model. The MKII version has some notable differences, such as the front bumper positioned higher up, removing the bulky, hollowed out radiator grill. The front cover is distinguished by a boss to house the inline six and its carburettors, which are larger than the Spitfire's in-line 4. The numerous chrome touches around the doors, windshield, bumpers and door handles recall the sixties spirit of English sports cars. To access the interior, flexibility and precision are essential. The seat on board is larger than at first glance, well seated in leather-covered seats. The wooden dashboard accommodates numerous counters, and offers a more luxurious finish than on the Spitfire cousin.

The choice of in-line 6-cylinder allows the GT6 to display 105 horsepower, achieved at 5,300 rpm. Its impressive torque, combined with a fairly light body, makes it possible to offer sporty behavior, which is however limited. The Triumph GT6 is closer to an excellent GT than to a sports car per se. A 4-speed mechanical gearbox unleashes the symphony of the 6 in line, which is very impressive during operation, even at low revs. The Triumph GT6 was produced until 1974, 8 years after its presentation. Its Fastback design gives it an inimitable charm forever.
