Launched in 2008 at the Paris Motor Show, the Ferrari California takes a special place in the Ferrari catalog and history. Halfway between performance and comfort, the California seduces and benefits from a new version in 2012, the California 30. The Ferrari California, an iconic piece of automotive engineering from the prancing horse brand, has undergone a significant evolution with the “30" version. This name is not trivial, as it refers to reducing its weight by 30 kg and increasing its power by 30 horsepower compared to the original model.
The Ferrari California was launched in 2008 at the Paris Motor Show. This car, defined as a 2+2 grand tourer with a retractable roof, was part of Ferrari's desire to attract new customers looking for a combination of performance and daily versatility. In 2012, Ferrari introduced the updated version, nicknamed “California 30", offering notable improvements in performance and efficiency.
The California 30 is powered by a 4.3-liter V8 engine. This unit has been improved to produce 490 horsepower at 7750 rpm and 505 Nm of torque at 5000 rpm. The vehicle is equipped with a dual-clutch, seven-speed automatic transmission.
One of the strengths of the California 30 is its weight reduction. Thanks to the extensive use of aluminum in its construction and other improvements, the weight of the car was reduced by 30 kg, giving a total empty weight of 1735 kg. These improvements translate into a significant improvement in performance. The California 30 can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds. The suspension has also been revised, with the adoption of new front suspension geometries and the use of magneto-rheological (MagneRide) shock absorbers, allowing for faster response and better handling.
Aesthetically, the California 30 stayed true to the original California design, with a few minor changes. The retractable hard roof, one of the key features, allows a transition from coupe to convertible in just 14 seconds. With the update, Ferrari has also worked on fuel efficiency, improving the direct injection system and optimizing engine management. These adjustments resulted in a reduction in CO2 emissions and better fuel consumption.
The Ferrari California 30 represents an evolution of the original model, combining increased performance with improved efficiency, while maintaining the versatility and elegance that made the California a success since its launch.
