Our Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider 1600 was delivered new in France at the beginning of 1965. It has known two owners since the 2000s, including its current owner since 2017.
This example is in a remarkable general condition, thanks in particular to the renovation of aesthetic and mechanical elements. In a refurbished Bianco color, this Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider has a renovated black soft top, numerous chromes recently changed and new black leather upholstery.
On the mechanical side, our example benefited from an engine change during its renovation. It has the Giulia TI's 92-horsepower 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine, combined with the 5-speed manual gearbox. Its operation and performance are intact. Its maintenance is carried out at the Atelier des Pierres Dorées. An overhaul was carried out at 58,357 km, with the engine, gearbox, axle and brakes replaced. A recent battery as well as a revision of the electrical systems and the cooling radiator are added to all the work.
Here is the equipment that our Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider 1600 has:
In the years following the end of the Second World War, the majority of European countries were in financial difficulty. Brands need to adapt their products to the new trend. Alfa Romeo then decided to produce cars on a large scale with more reasonable engines that were cheaper for customers. The Alfa Romeo 1900 will therefore appear at the Paris Motor Show in 1950. Produced in Berlina and Sprint versions, it is described by the brand as “The family car that win races”. Powered by a 90-horsepower 4-cylinder dual-camshaft, its engine evolves with the TI (100 horsepower), Super and TI Super (115 horsepower) versions, always equipped with a 4-speed and 5-speed manual gearbox for the Super Sprint versions.
In 1954, a new model called Giulietta was presented at the Turin Motor Show. The first models produced were then Sprint Coupes, followed a year later by Sedan sedans. The first post-war Alfa Romeo convertible appeared in mid-1955 with the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, built in collaboration with Pininfarina. It has a 1.3-litre 4-cylinder engine developing 65 horsepower, improved for the 90-horsepower “Veloce” version. The models from 1954 to 1959 were then part of the 750 series, which was abandoned in favor of the 101 series, bringing some modifications to the models. The Giulietta aesthetic will not be changed. In contrast, the Spider versions benefit from a slightly longer wheelbase, larger and stronger camshafts and crankshaft than before to cope with future increases in displacement, and a redesigned gearbox.
A real success, the Giulietta was however replaced in 1962 by the Giulia, however, in 1962, Alfa Romeo having realized that a more powerful model was necessary to remain a competitor on the market. The Alfa Romeo Giulia is an improved and rebadged model directly taken from its predecessor Giulietta. The 1.3 l 4 cylinder is improved, now with a displacement of 1.6 l for a power between 90 and 100 horsepower. The aesthetic changes between the two models are minor, but more visible on the Spider version of the Giulia. In fact, the larger 1600 cc engine forces Pininfarina to bulge the Giulia's hood. Still very light at only about 900 kilos, the Giulia Spider offers good performance with 92 horsepower, and 112 horsepower in its Veloce version. It was then one of the most efficient sports cars of its time.
