Launched in 2004, the sixth generation of the Porsche 911 took the name 997. Produced from 2004 to 2012, the 997 returned to round headlights, and marked the reappearance of a more powerful S range. Both engines were unveiled at the same time, including the appearance of a new 3.8L Flat 6, combined with a chassis that was more rigid and more efficient than its predecessors. The Porsche 997 Carrera S was first introduced in 2004. This generation, referred to under the internal code “997”, marked a stylistic return to more traditional 911 elements, after the radical changes made by the previous 996.
At the technical level, the 997 Carrera S was launched with a 3.8-liter flat-six engine, an expansion compared to the 3.6-liter engine in the standard 997 Carrera. This engine developed 355 hp (261 kW) at 6600 rpm, with a maximum torque of 400 Nm at 4600 rpm. Thanks to this engine, the Carrera S could reach a top speed of 293 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in about 4.8 seconds.
The car was equipped with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. A five-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission was also available as an option. In 2009, along with the restyled model (often referred to as 997.2), the 997 Carrera S received Porsche's new seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, offering faster gear changes and better fuel efficiency. Aesthetically, the 997 marked a return to rounded oval headlights, reminiscent of those of the 993 and moving away from the teardrop headlights of the 996. The Carrera S model was distinguished by specific details such as double exhaust tips and unique rims.
The 997 Carrera S also introduced several technological innovations, including the PCM (Porsche Communication Management) navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, and an iPod audio interface. In terms of safety, it was equipped with front and side airbags, Porsche Stability Management (PSM) technology and, in later models, Porsche Traction Management (PTM). Production of the Porsche 997 Carrera S continued until 2012, when it was succeeded by the 991 generation. The 997 is often regarded by enthusiasts and critics as one of the best iterations of the 911 because of its balance between modern performance and classic Porsche style.
