The Porsche 911 Type 993 Carrera 3.6, produced between 1994 and 1998, represents the latest generation of air-cooled 911. Succeeding the Type 964, it represents a complete redesign with only 20% of parts taken from the previous model. Designed by Tony Hatter, the 993 maintains the iconic 911 architecture while integrating wider fenders, smoother bumpers, and a retractable rear spoiler.
Among the technical advances, the new light-alloy multi-link rear axle, called the “Weissach axle”, significantly improves handling and reduces the tendency to oversteer. This chassis, derived from an aborted saloon project (the Porsche 989), also contributes to increased comfort.
Under the hood, the Carrera 3.6 is equipped with a 3.6-liter M64 engine that develops more power thanks to the VarioRAM system, improving mid-range torque. The 993 is also the first 911 to adopt a standard six-speed manual transmission, with a Tiptronic option on rear-wheel drive models.
The 993 is available in coupe, convertible, rear-wheel drive (“C2") or all-wheel drive (“C4") versions, the latter using a lightweight system inspired by the Porsche 959. With better brakes, revised suspension and a refined chassis, the 993 remains a flagship model in Porsche's history.
